It’s important to find a good way to study if you want to learn cybersecurity. Learning is a constant thing in cybersecurity and it’s important to have an effective learning strategy to be efficient and get the most from your learning.
Here’s how I’ve studied for the last 10+ years…
- Set a goal. You need to have a purpose and direction for your studying, and set a goal that you want to achieve after a period of time. I usually spend 2-3 months of focused studying towards my goal, but depending on the goal, the time period can be longer or shorter. If you are just getting started, it’s best to focus on the fundamentals.
- Eliminate distractions. I have a wife and young children and that makes it difficult to study during normal hours. I wake up 2-3 hours before work because that’s when my family is sleeping. I then study for 1 hour and practice for at least 1 hour. When the kids go to bed at night, I read for another hour.
- Daily practice. Practice is important and it’s the best way for me to fully understand and retain a topic. I usually practice something multiple times before I start to understand it.
- Keep a routine. I study and practice at the same times everyday (including weekends) and I’ve done that ever since I started my learning journey. There are few life events that change my routine.
- Teach. I’ve always shared the things I was learning with other people, and now that my kids are a bit older, I’ve started teaching it to them. Teaching has really helped me to understand it, especially teaching it to my kids because I need to make it easy for them to understand.
- Take a break. After you achieve your goal, you need to take some time to reflect on what you learned and refresh your mind. This doesn’t mean to totally stop learning but do it with less effort. I usually take 1-2 weeks for a break after hitting a goal.
If you build a routine and stay focused, it will be much easier to quickly learn cybersecurity and become an expert.
