There is so much to learn for cybersecurity, especially if you want to be good at it. How do you remember everything?
I get asked this question a lot and my answer is… you don’t. Let me explain.
You really just need a solid understanding of the basics and fundamentals for your area of cybersecurity and the rest is just “point in time knowledge” where you learn what you need to accomplish a specific task or role and then move on. Once you have a good foundation in a certain area and some experience, you need to research a little less over time and finding the information becomes easier.
Many people move around to different employers during their career, and different employers will likely have different tools and processes. You could also learn a specific tool very well but that tool may become obsolete over a few years. The one thing that almost never changes are the basics and fundamentals. These fundamentals include networking, Linux, Windows, and coding.
The key to success is knowing what to search for and having the patience to sift through various resources such as documentation and blogs. Over time, you’ll develop a sense of what to look for and where to find it, which makes the process much easier.
Cybersecurity is a constantly evolving field and it’s impossible to know everything, but with a solid foundation and a willingness to learn, you can excel in this field.
